What is Singles‘ Day?

"Singles'

The holiday originated in China and takes place every year on November 11. As the name suggests, “Singles’ Day” celebrates people who are not in a relationship. The number 1 in the date (11/11) symbolizes a «stick.» In Chinese internet slang, this refers to an unmarried man who contributes nothing to the family lineage. This also aligns with the day’s original name, which was “Bachelors’ Day.”

Originally, November 11 was promoted as a shopping day primarily by the Chinese Alibaba Group, which owns AliExpress, among other brands. However, many other stores now participate, and the day has become an integral part of the retail calendar.

Is there such a day in Switzerland?

In addition to AliExpress, which ships its products to Switzerland (and even offers cashback through Rabattcorner), there are now many Swiss online stores that lower their prices on November 11. Some stores use the number 11 as a discount, others focus on the “Singles’ Day” aspect, and still others simply lower their prices without making a big deal out of it. So don’t worry—even if you’re not single, you can still take advantage of great deals on this day.

Singles‘ Day is no longer an unfamiliar concept in the Swiss retail world. While some Swiss stores are still trying to figure out how to position themselves for Singles‘ Day, for other retailers, the day has long been a fixed date on the calendar when they lower their prices.

Is Singles‘ Day a better deal than Black Friday?

With the rise of Singles‘ Day in Europe, the question remains whether the day might actually be even more worthwhile than Black Friday, the biggest shopping day of the year. Unfortunately, the answer isn’t quite that simple.

Since Black Friday has been well-known in Europe for some time, it’s currently a bigger day in Switzerland than Singles’ Day. However, Singles’ Day is the biggest shopping day of the year in terms of sales and is still experiencing strong growth. So it remains to be seen whether November 11 will continue to grow to the point where it might even supplant Black Friday.

Furthermore, the day of the week could play a role. While Black Friday always takes place on a Friday and the following weekend, Singles’ Day is always on November 11—regardless of what day of the week it falls on. It’s well known that customers shop less on a Wednesday than on a Sunday, which could lead to Singles Days of varying intensity over the years.
